Preventing Frozen Pipes

Here in Texas, we are accustomed to relatively mild winters. If this winter has taught us anything, it is that we can’t always rely on assuming that every winter will be the same. When temperatures drop, it is important to consider what systems in your home may be impacted. One costly hazard of freezing temperatures is the elevated risk of frozen water pipes. Frozen water pipes can burst, leading to flooding and costly damages to your property.

WHAT CAUSES PIPES TO FREEZE

While there is no guaranteed protection against pipes freezing, there are steps you can take to lower the possibility of your pipes freezing and bursting. One important factor is whether or not your pipes are insulated. Here in Texas, the stronger likelihood is that you have uninsulated pipes. This impacts the length of time it may take for your pipes to freeze. On average, pipes will freeze within four to five hours when temperatures are 20 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.

WHAT STEPS CAN I TAKE?

One step you can take is making sure that your pipes are insulated, especially in crawl spaces or attics, even if you live in an area where freezing temperatures are uncommon. Seal anything leaks that might allow cold air inside of your home. Finally, allowing your faucet to drip overnight, especially when not in heavy use, may be enough to keep the water moving and prevent pipes from freezing.
