Signs My Furnace May Need Replacement

Furnace

Keeping warm and cozy is a priority through the colder winter months. It is important to routinely have your system examined to ensure that you won’t have any worries once the temperatures drop. When something does go wrong with your furnace, you’ll have to assess if repair or replacement is your best option. This depends on a variety of factors.

Age

In general, your furnace will begin to fail with age. On average, the lifespan of a furnace is 15-20 years, which can vary depending on the model and proper maintenance. If you’ve already needed repairs, and if your appliance is getting older, it may be time to replace it. Even if your system is still working, the efficiency can drop significantly. This can lead to higher energy bills.

Noises

In general, your heating system should operate quietly. If you notice a lot of noise, such as clanging or banging, this can often be a warning sign that there is an issue in the furnace. It is important to have this assessed quickly to ensure the problem doesn’t get worse.

Pilot Flame Color

The pilot flame should be a vibrant, bright blue. If the flame is yellow, it is a clear sign that the gas entering the system isn’t getting burned off. If it is weak or wavy, this can be a sign that the gas within the system isn’t being burned out. This could also be a sign of improper ventilation.
